Preface You are 25 years old. Your parents died of cancer a few years ago. You and your brother Abel have been able to cope with this loss for a long time. Your relationship as siblings has only improved as a result. You spend a lot of time together and you know that you can come to him with anything that is bothering you. And even if you don't always agree, you can be sure that Abel will always help you. One day you are spectator in court. Abel is accused of manslaughter. Your brother claims to have acted in self-defense, but he cannot prove it. You believe Abel. You can't imagine that he would take another person's life for no reason. Every now and then he casts a glance at you. He seems uncertain and confused, unlike in the past. Fortunately, the evidence is very thin and it seems that your brother is telling the truth. He is acquitted. But something inside him broke. You just don't know what. What do you do? Together with your brother, you go to a psychologist. He has several sessions there, but the psychologist can't identify anything. Nevertheless, Abel is different. He has his usual self-confidence again, but he seems distant. You talk less and less with each other and you don't know how to help him anymore. You think you are losing your mind, but always manage to think straight in the end. You are afraid for your brother, that the last part of your family will break. What do you do? 2 years later Abel is on trial again. This time he is accused of multiple murder. And the evidence is overwhelming. You learn things about your brother that deeply shock you. He was a member of a drug cartel. In an attempt to expand his own territory of influence, he was ambushed. 52 people died from gunshot and stab wounds. You hardly believe what you hear. But Abel is not denying anything; on the contrary. He admits everything without regret. What do you do? Abel has been sentenced. You have huge struggles to accept what you have experienced. You cannot understand how your brother could have undergone such a change. You wonder if you could have seen it. But you do not know. The only thing you have left are questions and the hope that you have not lost your family for good. Just as you were beginning to get along with this situation, you were contacted by the prison staff. Your brother is allowed to have a visitor for the first time in several months. What do you do? Of course you visit him. After all, he is family. As if you would ever do anything else. But in your head all the images come up again that you hoped you would never have to think about again. And then you sit in front of him. He smiles, but you can see in his eyes that he is not happy to see you. Quite the opposite, you see anger. You don't know how to start, so you tell him what happened in your last months. Abel does not react. You try to tell him as kindly as possible how sad and disappointed you are. But you also want to make him understand that you always want to stand by him and help him. He reacts. Abel tells you his story. A story full of lies, intrigues, misinformation and misinterpretations. You are completely speechless. Your brother seems to have turned his back on reality. In all his actions, in everything he says, he sees no fault. He sees himself as a victim of a misguided society. He tries to make you understand that he should have the power to decide about every life at his own discretion. It is his world. No one can tell him what to do and what not to do. Just as you are about to leave, he threatens you. He wants revenge for his suffering, and gives you several names and addresses whose lives you should end. He doesn't care about what you have to do for it. Just as little as he cares about you. And in case you resist, he still has room for your name on the list. Whoever is not for him is against him. You leave. What do you do? |
